STATEMENT

'Mitochondria provoke questioning about memory and its transmission. They symbolize the essential and proliferating sap of the cell of life—universal and yet uniquely individual in its essence'

Working on the accumulation of patterns and the rehashing of her own memories and obsessions, Sophie Borneck gave birth to her first Mitochondria in 2014. Since then, this series has continued to evolve over time, guided by an automatism of creation that seeks to exhaust its initial form.

Linking the tiny to the whole, the Mitochondria, conceived as inner landscapes, offer a colorful and vivid radiography of the process of creating the canvas, akin to a self-portrait and an intimate exploration. Developed from a memory or emotion, starting from color patches and evolving into motion, the Mitochondria, unique and singular in their individuality, eventually build unconscious and recognizable images arising from their assembly.

They become hypnagogic, evoking clouds that sometimes create fleeting and ephemeral shapes, appearing legible before instantly disappearing—much like memories transforming with time, in constant evolution.

At the core of this artistic exploration, the Mitochondria provoke questioning about memory and its transmission. They symbolize the essential and proliferating sap of the cell of life—universal and yet uniquely individual in its essence.

The artist primarily practices acrylic painting, impulsively using colors to capture a moment of her memory. Then, with delicacy, she adds black ink lines to create the form, the cell, and finally the eye, granting each Mitochondrion its own personalized identity.

These elements are combined in superposition, and the resulting works carry both a complete image of this memory and a multitude of juxtaposed cells, giving life to a hybrid cellular group where each possesses its own personality.
