The Vehicle is a Japanese artist duo formed in 1996 by Takeshi Yoshida and Miki Kawahara. Based on their slogan ‘Art begins at home’, they take views from everyday life and creates them into two- and three-dimensional works that defies the boundaries of creative expression.
They won the Jury Prize in the 5th Art Business Audition at Great Art Festival (Sony Music Entertainment) with ‘Shirakaba’ – Electronic Appliance Storage Furniture in 1996. Their selected solo exhibitions include ‘Motorama’ (1999), ‘In the family way’ (1999), ‘TOKYORAMA’ at Anewal Gallery, Kyoto (2000), and ‘Story of their Life’ at Hillside Forum (2007). Their selected group exhibitions include 2006 Pusan Biennale, The Sea Art Festival ‘Living furniture’ (2006), ‘Osaka Art Kaleidoscope 2007’ at Osaka Contemporary Art Center, and ‘Japan Contemporary Art Festival’ at Heyli Art Village (South Korea).
The Vehicle extracts moments in our “everyday life” that resemble scenes, experiences, and stories from movies and TV dramas and turn them into anti-genre works. The “Blue Back” series, our recent body of work, originates from the blue background used in video synthesis technology. With our work as a backdrop, we hope that the audience will feel the video-like sensation and vision, just like being in a daydream that lies between the everyday and imaginary life.
For this show themed ‘Kintsugi,’ we investigated what the catalyst is that connects one work to another. Our conclusion – one is space; another is time. Each work can be seen as an independent work by itself, but also as two sets of three photographic works that include manipulation of our past work. By connecting those works, we hope each viewer will create their own new image and story.
